Three Tiny Portable Games

Posted on 31 May 2007 by Christine Lank

This web site lists three small portable Windows games for you to try out: http://stuff.goatdairying.com/programs/games/games.html.

Clicking – Just click on like-coloured heads of three or more vertical or horizontal groupings and do it quickly. This game is so simple but it’s extremely addictive.

Uno – The classic card game!

Logix – I didn’t play this one yet but it’s a little logic game.

Utilities: KeePass Password Manager

Posted on 20 May 2007 by Christine Lank

I finally decided to do something about all the bits of paper hanging around containing my user ids and passwords. On PortableApps.com, I tested out a really good utility for managing and storing your passwords called KeePass.

This small utility (1.27 MB) allows you to group all your user names and passwords by category so they are easy to find. A master password needs to be set for the whole database – don’t forget this password! This application has a lot of features and it even has a password generator. You can export your passwords to different file formats and import them from other sources such as a csv file.

Now, time to enter all those passwords…

Zynaps remake

Posted on 10 May 2007 by Christine Lank

Here’s a pretty good Zynaps remake called Zynaps Remix. This is a left-to-right scrolling space shooter; shoot at every space ship you can but with a challenging landscape on both the top and bottom of the screen that you have to avoid running into. Collect power packs – squares with a “P” on them – along the way. The folder size is 18.7 MB.

Try out the original DOS version that inspired the modern Prince of Persia games: Download the original Prince of Persia here.

Also, here’s an online Flash version.

The Prince of Persia Unofficial Website has loads of information on all versions of Prince of Persia – an excellent resource!

Galaxian Obsession

Posted on 05 May 2007 by Christine Lank

I can’t seem to stop playing Galaxian! Here are a few more portable Galaxian games:

Glaxium
This is a Windows and Linux 3D game. It’s almost like a Skyroads mixed with Galaxian and it’s really good.

Online Galaxian Flash Games

Galaxian – easy version
This is a good training game for Galaxian; I was able to get through the third level on the first try. It’s much slower and the kamikaze ships don’t appear through the first three levels; I don’t know if they appear at all.

Galaxian and Galaga – faithful remakes
These are really good remakes! The Galaxian game was the best Flash version I tested.

And don’t forget, you can play Galaxian on many different emulators. Here’s a ColecoVision emulator that includes a game pack with Galaxian.

My favorite portable Galaxian is still Minionsoft’s Galaxian!

If you want to learn more about the game and its history, visit The Unofficial Galaxian Homepage.

Galaxian

Posted on 02 May 2007 by Christine Lank

If you really like Space Invaders but sometimes wish those aliens would move a bit faster in the first few levels, it might be a good time to try out Galaxian, especially this portable Galaxian remake from MinionSoft(Select Arcade from the menu on the left).

This game will keep you on your toes! First of all, these speedy aliens are seriously intent on invasion and are well prepared with plenty of ammunition to spare. Adding to the challenge is the lack of cover – there’s no hiding from aliens in this game! Although, if you need a very quick breather, you can sneak over to the extreme left and right of the screen where alien firepower can’t reach, but make it quick: the aliens are moving in fast!

If that wasn’t enough challenge, the aliens don’t all stay fixed in their swarm pack as in Space Invaders. You have continuous assaults from fighters leaving the pack and moving in close challenging you to out-maneuver not only falling bombs from the swarm but also these wild flyers. The starry background scrolls vertically too, adding to all that action.
